Forever 21 and the Farmer’s Market

Yesterday was…how shall I say? Interesting. Hot. Annoying at times. Crowded. Hot. Loud. Hot.

Originally we were supposed to take our students to see the Dead Sea Scrolls at the NC Museum of Natural Science in Raleigh. Except that on Wednesday, the museum closed because of a leak. So we had to cancel our tour for yesterday and the best Plan B we could come up with was…the mall. We took a van full of middle-aged women to the mall and let them loose, and boy. It was, uh, fun.

Following are the top 8 moments worth sharing:

  1. One student referred to a Chinese delicacy as “eating technicals on a screwer.”
  2. This same student also called scuppernong grapes “scufflelong” – I kid you not.
  3. I got a satin headband with beads and FEATHERS (hells yeah!) and some hot sunglasses from Forever 21 for $10 total.
  4. I ate the largest slice of fried green tomato I have ever seen.
  5. A woman old enough to be my grandmother explained to me that “womens should have some privacy with their mens in the bedroom” – good to know.
  6. I explained what pimento cheese was to my favorite Yankee in the whole wide world – I love you, K, and you will love pimento cheese, I promise!
  7. I found the greatest testament to magazine cover airbrushing ever, and I feel so much better about myself.
  8. I heard three students refer to yesterday as “the vacation we needed before school starts” and it almost made me cry – for these women, a vacation is a trip to the mall and the Farmer’s Market – life is good, for sure.

Do you love my pretty new phone? I do. It’s one of those slider phones that has the QWERTY keyboard and is fun to slide back and forth. If you’re not jealous, you should be, because this bad boy is some kinda cute!
