Roller Skates for Tuesday

Because I just can’t get enough YouTube today, here’s the Flight of the Conchords, showing off their mad skillz with the “Ladies of the World.” I want to find my old roller skates. Now.

Leprechauns

I found this video this morning. I almost peed in my pants. I know it’s not St. Patrick’s Day, but KISS THEM, THEY’RE IRISH! (thanks, dooce)

Dream a little dream

I dreamed about the Bachelorette last night. That’s how I know I’m crazy. I watched THREE ENTIRE HOURS of that silly little show, and I’ll be damned if I didn’t cry the whole way through. She picked that snowboarder kid, Jesse, and then she couldn’t keep her hands off of him during the after-show, and why oh why did I watch that? On the one hand, I feel infinitely dumber. On the other hand, I believe in life after love!!! Thanks, ABC.

In my dream, there was a hot, hot man who was my ex, and he came over for dinner. He had what you might call a little bit of a drug problem, so when the taxi dropped him off at my house, I knew (in my dream) that he wasn’t clean yet. But he was so hot. So smoking hot. So hot that I had him over for dinner despite the fact that MY HUSBAND was out in the yard cutting the grass. And in my dream, I had to tell him that he wasn’t the one (a la Deanna) even though I loved him and his scruffy face so very much.

Scruffy-faced hot man, if you are out there, I enjoyed my time with you in my dream. I hope that you can clear up your addiction issues (you should check out A&E’s Intervention for that) and that you find the woman of your dreams. She won’t be nearly as fabulous as I am, of course, but you’ll be okay.

In other news, I’d like to talk politics for just a moment. In case you live in a hole, Jesse Helms died on July 4th. For North Carolinians, whether Democrat or Republican, his passing is historically significant, because he was one of our longest-serving senators. Aside from the fact that he was a polarizing figure in politics, he was also a father and grandfather, a Southern gentleman that believed in God and country, and a friend to a lot of people, including the men that traveled in my grandfather’s circuit (the NC Bar, the Sphinx Club, etc.).

Last night, as I was watching the news (yes, I do know that TV exists outside of the “reality” genre, thank you very much), I was struck that WTVD found more than a handful of black mourners at the visitation for Helms. The N&O reported all weekend long that the black community was sorry he was dead, but that he did nothing for race relations in NC and so really, they weren’t THAT sorry. But then yesterday, a group of middle-aged black men said separately, on camera, that while Jesse Helms didn’t do anything for the civil rights movement, he did stand up for North Carolinians and he did work tirelessly to make NC a better place to live.

I think, all things considered, that’s quite remarkable. I think that, 40 years after racial unrest in the South, it’s a testament to how far we’ve come, who we are as a state, and how much further we have to go.

And by the way, Dick Cheney’s coming to town today for the funeral. Wear your hunter’s orange and hope for the best, people.
